Hailing from Naarm in Australia, Tristan Hallis aka DJ BORING was an artist always looking for ways to engage in his local scene. In 2015 his curiosity and longing for a change inspired a move overseas to London, where he found a new creative stimulus which would set him on the path which he’s still on today.
When working at a Shoreditch coffee shop, Hallis would set the mood by improvising sets off a tablet’s music app and he recalls Moodymann’s DJ-Kicks (2016), which he discovered in this context, as being a decisive inspirational spark in his journey. Ever since then, DJ BORING has been working on his craft, patiently building his talents and catalogue into a vibrant and illustrious career that has taken him to all corners of the globe. Any interaction with DJ BORING reveals a truly personable character. A sharp sense of humor and self-deprecative edge are contrasted with an uncompromising attention to his craft.
It is no surprise that the very essence of DJ BORING’s personality is ingrained into his DJ-Kicks. After all, Hallis himself points out “I like to have my personality shine out through every bit of work that I do.” Hallis’ DJ-Kicks mix is designed to engage the senses. Spanning a range of moods and genres, this mix is for the quiet, brain-tingling moments of solitude at home, and the chest-rattling hysteria of the club.
“This DJ-Kicks mix is my personality to a tee,” smiles Hallis, relishing the creative freedom of exploring myriad emotional territories. “It’s a perfect balance of everything that I love; it’s hopeful and meditative, but also fun. I hope people listen to it front to back and go on the journey – because it goes everywhere.”
