We were rather impressed by James Bangura’s last release, the bustling and forthright Bronx Metro EP on Step Back Trax, and this belated follow-up on Mister Saturday Night is pretty darn good, too. Its’ six tracks explore similarly psychedelic, mind-altering sonic territory, with the Washington, D.C-based producer cannily fixing warped acid lines, deep space chords and sci-fi melodies to breakbeat hardcore and techno-inspired, house-tempo drums and plenty of spacey aural textures. Highlights include the roughneck, early jungle-inspired heaviness of ‘Purpose of Self’, the sub-heavy creepiness of ‘Talking Loose’, the dubby (but extra percussive) techno throb of ‘Big Change’ and the hazy late-night hypnotism of ‘Synthetic Sustenance’.
