It would be fair to say that Late Nite ‘DUB’ Addict (real name Dan Smith) has found a home at the reborn TRAX label. Since joining the infamous imprint in the summer of 2020, he’s released an astonishing nine EPs. Here he makes it a straight 10 via his first four-tracker of 2021. Smith begins in quietly impressive form via the chunky beats, even chunkier bass and sampled laughter of ‘Minimal Criminal’, a kind of druggy drum jam for sweaty basements, before doffing a cap to the Windy City’s house heritage on the retro-futurist sleaze of ‘Come On Move’. ‘Chubby Chunks’ adds warehouse-ready, hip-house style riffs to a dancehall-influenced acid house groove, while ‘I Feel Energy’ peppers another wonky, early morning rhythm with Technotronic and deep house samples.
