"American ambient powerhouse zake is back (he never really goes away, to be honest - the man must spend 36 hours a day making music, the amount he releases, yet it's all great. HH is a new album that, from the notes that come with it, we think has been inspired by time spent in hospital rooms. "Pieces of my heart, heard through the sounds of HH. For my wife," says the producer, who adds this is his way of processing some personal pain. Across four pieces, his signature synth layers unfold at a glacial pace. They capture the feeling of being suspended in time, some with a more ominous tone than others, but all beautifully pure.
zake has long mastered the art of go-slow pacing with gradual changes in the density and timbre of his sounds. Here, four extended ambient pieces unfold through slow-moving synth layers and sustained tonal clusters shaped by hospital room stillness on this new one from the eve present ambient don, zake. 'HH.1' opens with low-frequency drones and faint harmonic shifts that hover without a rhythmic anchor. 'HH.2' introduces higher tones with subtle detuning, creating tension. 'HH.3' darkens through thicker layering and reduced harmonic movement while 'HH.4' thins the texture with long decay tails. They say the best art comes out of adversity, and this is an album that proves it.
